Caregiver Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and reliable caregiver who is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) to provide high-quality in-home support to clients who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or prefer ASL communication. The caregiver will assist with daily living activities, provide companionship, ensure safety, and support the client’s independence in their home environment. ⸻ Key Responsibilities Personal Care & Daily Living Support • Assist with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and hygiene. • Support safe ambulation, transfers, and mobility. • Provide assistance with meal planning, cooking, and feeding as needed. • Perform light housekeeping, laundry, and home organization tasks. • Offer medication reminders and observe for changes in client’s condition. Communication & ASL Support • Communicate with the client using American Sign Language fluently and accurately. • Understand Deaf culture and communication norms. • Assist with interpreting basic information for the client when needed (non-medical). • Facilitate effective communication between the client, family, and agency staff. Companionship & Emotional Support • Engage the client in conversation, activities, and community outings when appropriate. • Provide social interaction to enhance emotional and mental well-being. • Encourage independence and respect client preferences. Safety & Reporting • Monitor and report any changes in physical or emotional condition. • Follow all care plans, agency policies, and state home-care regulations. • Maintain accurate documentation of services provided. ⸻ Job Requirements Education & Experience • High school diploma or GED required. • Previous caregiving, home health aide, or personal care experience preferred (but some agencies will train). ASL Skills • Fluent in American Sign Language (required). • Knowledge of Deaf culture and communication practices. • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully without relying on spoken language. Certifications (optional but preferred) • CPR / First Aid. • CNA certification (if applicable or preferred by agency). • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if transportation is part of the role). Other Requirements • Must pass a criminal background check and reference checks. • Ability to lift 25–50 pounds depending on client needs. • Must be punctual, dependable, patient, and compassionate. • Ability to work independently and follow care plans. ⸻ Preferred Qualifications • Experience working with Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals. • Experience in home care, assisted living, or community-based care. • Comfort using written communication methods (text, notes, apps) if needed.
