Certified Medication Technician (CMT) Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY: Administers both over the counter and prescribed medications/treatment for resident illness. Renders minor first aid and subsequent treatment due to resident injury. Mature in judgment and able to recognize the needs of residents, possess decision-making ability in matters pertaining to the personal care and general welfare of residents. Scope of Job Tasks: • Sterilizes, disinfects, anoints, and bandages minor cuts/burns. • Administers medications, such as aspirin or antiseptic solution to relieve pain or prevent infection until the patient can receive professional care. • Gives prescribed medicines and treatments for illness and records all such activity in the Medication Administration Record (MAR). • Will assist in providing personal care assistance to residents as required. • May be required to assume duties of Relief SIC (Supervisor-in-Charge) on an intermittent basis as needed or designated be the Resident Care Director. • Performs other duties as assigned. Job Specifications: Should possess basic knowledge of facility policies and procedures. Must be calm amidst numerous distractions, and able to handle emergencies with confidence and knowledge. Education: High school graduate or its equivalent is preferred. Must be listed on the state Medication Aide Registry and be able to perform Certified Nursing Skills. Adequate medication administration achieved in-house. Must be validated by RN. Needs basic communication skills. Must be able to read, write, and follow oral instructions. Must have basic computer skills. Willingness to learn and attend educational seminars to further knowledge base. Work Experience: Previous health related experience preferable, especially in geriatric care. Can receive on-the-job-training under close supervision. Will be required to take the New Med Tech Class. Physical Demands: Good physical and mental health. Turning, stooping, bending, and stretching to administer medications and treatments is necessary. Finger and hand dexterity to maneuver medication containers, vials, bottles, etc. Visual and aural acuity to detect change in resident condition. Ability to maneuver medication cart, which requires 14lbs of exertion to move. Must be able to work every other weekend. Must be able to pass a THC included drug screen.
