Harborview Decatur Skilled Nursing Facility exceeded my expectations and was truly an answer to my prayers.
My older sister is a US Veteran living in Georgia, who required short-term skilled nursing and rehabilitative care following a partial foot amputation. Her VA social worker provided me with a list of eight VA-contracted facilities (with the potential for long term care) located in the Atlanta area. I was immediately distraught because I have seen and heard so many horror stories about abuse and neglect involving nursing facilities, especially government contracted ones. It was not financially feasible to relocate my sister closer to me on the west coast, so naturally I was terrified at the thought of having her so far away and expected the worst possible scenario. However, upon comparing each nursing facility, in-person and on paper, I found Harborview Decatur in Decatur, GA to be the best choice for my sister, and I’m so glad I made this decision.
Harborview Decatur is relatively small (70 beds), safe, clean, with adequate facilities and an unassuming overall appearance. I observed residents in the common areas, and they all looked like they were treated well, while the overall interiors were both clean and inviting. There are no citations for abuse or neglect and staffing was rated as Average. Although their facility rating seemed appropriate (if not significantly better than most other places I visited), where it excels is at the staff level. Ms. Nakia Wilcher is the Social Service Director for Harborview Decatur and is the first person I met who coordinated my sister’s transition from the local hospital. I found Ms. Wilcher to be straightforward and transparent, yet very empathetic. She is also genuinely friendly, highly professional, extremely knowledgeable, and very welcoming to discuss all possible options for my sister’s rehabilitative care. Utilizing a personalized treatment approach, Ms. Wilcher was able to successfully address my sister’s unique mental, emotional, and physical needs at the time. While seemingly able to understand the initial trepidation both my sister and I had, she quickly helped to put our fears at ease through her continued communication with me, as well as ongoing support for my sister. Along with this, Ms. Wilcher’s skill and expertise in successfully collaborating with the VA, local hospital and other healthcare professionals was outstanding--helping to ensure a seamlessly coordinated healthcare experience. I simply can’t thank her enough!
The same high quality of care is provided by the entire Harborview Decatur staff who are genuinely friendly, courteous, attentive, respectful and caring, which helped to make my sister’s stay so special. Kindness and peace were felt when we walked through the front door. It was a bit rough at first as my sister grew accustomed to the place, but the staff diligently worked to get her established and comfortable. Pretty soon she was happy to see her caregivers and entrusted them, especially Nurse Donna and the resident hair stylist. Again, I was kept fully informed as to any changes or needs that may have arisen. I firmly believe the staff is the reason for her timely recovery. My sister had all her meals served either in the dining room or in her room and access to plenty of snacks, which she loved. Her meds were administered correctly, her laundry was done regularly, and she was kept clean and content. There were lots of activities for the residents, but her immediate focus was on physical rehabilitation. My sister was there for about six months before being transferred to a long-term assisted living facility.
Even after my sister’s departure from Harborview Decatur, Ms. Wilcher made herself available to ensure my sister’s smooth transition to her new home. I can’t speak positively enough about the gracious care and respect my sister, and I received. It is something I will be forever thankful for. I highly recommend Harborview Decatur and their entire team.

During one of my visits to my father’s room, I encountered a disturbing situation involving the housekeeping supervisor. She entered the room smelling strongly of marijuana and, when I addressed it, she simply responded, “my bad.” This behavior is unacceptable and raises questions about whether proper background checks or drug testing are being conducted.
I am at the facility frequently, and I can confidently say that many employees display unprofessional behavior and inappropriate language around residents and visitors. I strongly believe an investigation into management practices and employee conduct is warranted.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I hope these concerns will be taken seriously and addressed promptly.

I went to the facility 10/15/25 for a tour and to consider placing my family member. I was appalled at the lack of customer service and zero professionalism. I live out of state and was seeking specific information about their services. The admission coordinator"s demeanor while interacting with me was unwelcoming, curt and abrupt. First impressions speaks volume, I would not reccomend this facility.

Been waiting on a $4000 refund from them since October, after I paid over $9700 for room and board for my elderly uncle. Supposedly the checks in the mail since 11/3. Even after several attempts to get refund, noone has responded.

This facility is sad to be in. Don’t be fooled by the morning shifts! The night shift is poor. Floors are so sticky every room and every hallway. No proper air flow. No railings on the bed for the people that may fall off. No proper lighting, this facility is no place you should leave your family members to be peaceful at. There’s no fun or colors, I see inconsistency with workers. On their phones or just poor attitudes. This place made me sad for my grandma and I really didn’t want to leave her but we have no choice for now! Please please please help the elders at this facility! This facility is unbearable. What a sad sight to see.
