As a Google Master Reviewer and Master Photographer with nearly 2 million views, I rarely post reviews that are not positive. But my recent experience at NHC Milan Rehabilitation Center compels me to share feedback that I hope will spark reflection and improvement. This is a first impression, which we all know is very important, but redemption is a possibility and I will update the post if I experience issues have been addressed and if we as a family will continue his tenure of rehabilitation at this facility. My 95-year-old father, who recently sustained a serious fall resulting in two broken arms, was admitted this week for rehabilitation. Over the past 24 hours, I’ve had the opportunity to observe the facility firsthand—both as his daughter and as someone who understands the power of public input. Here are a few areas of concern: 1. Cleanliness & Odor: Certain hallways had a persistent smell of urine. While I understand that staff can become desensitized to it, the odor suggests delays in cleaning either patients or the environment—something that directly impacts the comfort and dignity of those receiving care. 2. Some Staff Demeanor: Healthcare is demanding, and I appreciate the difficulty of working in an understaffed, high-stress setting. However, tone and temperament matter. Patients in this facility are people’s loved ones—not objects or burdens—and I believe management should re-emphasize training on patient-centered communication and compassionate care. 3. General Consideration: Loud conversations unrelated to patient care occurring in hallways at 6 a.m., socializing in outdoor smoking areas while patient call lights go unanswered, and witnessing a patient remain on the floor after a fall—all of these experiences left me uneasy about the current standard of attentiveness. There were bright spots. Lavender and Lesley were exceptional—professional, warm, and genuinely attentive. They set an example for what healthcare service should feel like. Also, I was grateful to be allowed to stay overnight with my father, which gave me peace of mind and him some comfort. This review is written not in condemnation, but in the hope that it will be received as constructive. Our elders deserve more than just care—they deserve dignity. And every visitor, regardless of title, should walk away believing that their loved one is in good hands. Update: The First 48 I wanted to provide an update to my initial review after spending more time at NHC Milan with my father. I’m happy to say that the experience has noticeably improved. Over the last 48 hours, every staff member I’ve encountered has been kind, attentive, and professional. They’ve made both my father and me feel more at ease, and their willingness to accommodate his needs has not gone unnoticed. I also had the opportunity to speak with two cousins who currently have loved ones at this facility. Both shared positive, first-hand experiences and encouraged me to trust that my dad is in good hands. Based on this continued care and these reassuring conversations, we’ve decided to stick it out here for his full recovery. I’ve adjusted my rating from 2 to 4 stars to reflect the progress we’ve seen—and I genuinely hope this level of service continues for every patient and family.

The facility is very clean, the grounds for patients and families in the back yard area are beautiful. The food the patient's recieve is very good, better then most hospitals and long term living. The staff is very friendly and helpful in most of their ways of handling difficult situations. I'd say that having volunteers with companion puppies and dogs would be a great bonus to have on a daily basis. There are way too many people in wheelchairs in the halls and the activity room. It would be even better if there was a tech savvy person to help the residents operate some of their daily tech issues, even though they may just need to do a quick check on the residents to make sure all their TVs are working right, keeping a phone near the bed for the residents. Overall our experience thus far has been very good. Thank you all for what you do for our elderly families.

I have applied 6 times. The only reason this facility would not allow me to take the CNA classes was because I’m a guy. I applied 2 weeks before classes were to start but strangely enough I didn’t get accepted. This is the only facility close enough to me that offers the CNA classes. I think it’s really sad that the people who run this facility are discriminating against me because I’m a guy. I’m in college taking my general education classes and this fall I will be applying to the nursing program. So this facility has no legitimate reason to not accept me. I would like to hear their reasoning for not accepting me all 6 times.

The service at Northbrook is awful. A patient answered the phone one night when I called to check on my mother and said I couldn't speak with a nurse and hung the phone up. The Nurse on the Day shift was rude. They had no Kleenex in the building. I was told the family had to provide there family members with them I will never put my love one in this place again. The condition here at Northbrook are not exceptable considering what they charge. Please don't send your love one to this place if you keep from it. They let my mother sleep in her cloths one night we had to go every day and stay until bedtime to make sure she got proper care.

Just finished 3 weeks of home physical therapy for hip replacement. I have been through rehab in the past for a major stroke and for double knee replacement. My prior rehab stints have been at either rehab facilities or out-patient rehab. Alton, at NHC was every bit as efficient, friendly and helpful as any therapists I gave had and I have had some good ones. I highly recommend NHC Healthcare.
