I wanted to recount an incident from today, March 28, 2024. As both a Realtor and a Detective with the local police department, I carry a firearm at all times. While conducting business with a resident at Newburgh Healthcare, I was interrupted by one of the facility's administrators. Initially, she informed me of the facility's "No gun" policy, supposedly posted at the entrance. I promptly clarified my status as a law enforcement officer, evident by my displayed badge adjacent to my firearm. This seemed to alter her approach slightly. However, she persisted, expressing discomfort with the open display of my firearm, despite its legality, as I was about to commence duty with the police department after my current engagement. Despite the absence of any observed signage, I educated her on the lawful right to carry within the building. Eventually, she departed, and I concluded my business. Subsequently, I informed other staff members about the legalities of firearm carrying in Indiana, although the administrator I initially encountered was unavailable for further discussion due to a meeting. Throughout the interaction, I maintained a courteous demeanor. Nevertheless, I remain perplexed by the administrator's insistence on denying a law enforcement officer, vested with arrest powers in Indiana, the right to carry within their premises. Notably, they did not ask me to leave. My real estate client and a title company officer present can attest to this exchange. One may draw their own conclusions, but I find this situation regrettable and felt I needed to express my concerns with those seeking to do business with this institution.

Regarding the response received from Newburgh Healthcare on 04/01/2024, I am deeply dismayed by the emphasis placed on my alleged lack of "discretion." Firstly, it's important to note that I consistently carry a firearm, which is permissible under Indiana gun laws for law-abiding citizens. This is not an uncommon practice and does not contravene the statement asserting concerns about residents being alarmed by non-uniformed individuals carrying firearms. My carrying of a firearm is solely for personal and communal safety in extreme circumstances, a precaution we all hope remains unnecessary. It is surprising that this situation has not arisen previously with other legally armed citizens. I'm relieved that I won't be revisiting an establishment seemingly intent on restricting law-abiding citizens who openly carry firearms.
If any resident was alarmed by the presence of a firearm, it was unintentional and completely unknown on my part. I did not interact with any residents (or than my client) during my visit, nor was I informed by the administrator of any concerns voiced by any residents. When I arrived, I proceeded directly from the entrance to my client's room. Legally, individuals permitted to carry firearms, like myself, have the right to do so openly or concealed, irrespective of their profession or activity.
Secondly, the situation involved open carry of a firearm, permissible under Indiana firearm laws concerning handguns. Additionally, my conspicuous badge, adjacent to my firearm, denoted my law enforcement affiliation, as my subsequent engagement was law enforcement-related. I possess statewide law enforcement authority in Indiana, a fact I communicated to the administrator. Frequently, I conduct official police duties beyond my jurisdiction, but within the state. Although I wasn't engaged in official police duties at the time, this point is irrelevant, as previously clarified by the whole legalities of carrying a firearm. I figured that informing the administrator that I was a law enforcement officer would have prevented and ceased further worry (to her, residents, and whomever else). Apparently, this was not the case.
Omissions in their response include addressing the misinformation I received regarding posted signs prohibiting firearms on the premises. I have attached photos of the front of the building for reference, showing that there are no such signs.

The woman that runs this facility makes it look like her family owns it when it fact it’s owned by an LLC that also owns a hospital. My dad was left to die with 3 infections. All were terminal. This place should be shut down. It’s a horrible place. We were told to stay away because of Covid. They continued to tell us to stay away a week after even this was after the pandemic. They called me, and said he was unresponsive. He actually was almost dead. They asked us what we wanted to do. Of course! Send him to the hospital! Deaconess filed a complaint against them immediately. There is a special place in somewhere for these people. The three infections were c-diff, sepsis, and pneumonia. We as well filed a complaint with the the state. I will never forgive this facility for its negligence. Deaconess also documented his physical abuse and or neglegence with photos.
