I spent a few weeks at Handmaker for rehabilitation after an accident. It felt safe and I appreciated the occupational and physical therapy. The food was plentiful and there were many alternate choices to the menu. The care was mostly good. There were times that I had to wait over an hour for my medication. Although that didn't happen often. I was contacted for follow up, to see if I had any questions or concerns. I have visited a number of rehabilitation centers over the years and I believe that Handmaker is one of the best.
I thoroughly enjoyed being at Handmakers Nursing Home. The personnel were always happy and eager to help. Physical Therapist were attentive to level of exercise. The chef came by to check on my likes and dislikes. Food was very good. If I need help in the future this is the best place they could send me too rehabilitate.
Hand Maker’s skilled nursing/physical therapy unit for post hospital recovery was fantastic for my mother, she has returned home in better condition than pre-hospitalization. Positive points to note: Kosher quality food- even if not the most appetizing for every meal, the quality was evident & alternatives always available. Only critique is no hot water for tea, that would have to be microwaved rather than boiled, for a tea snob that isn’t ideal but for the average person it’s not an issue. Also to note: proper silverware & napkins provided with each meal, making it feel more like home than eating from plastic. Caring staff- taking care of the elderly can be trying & difficult, at no point did I experience any impatience or dismissive member of staff regarding moms needs or my requests for daily review/additional tasks. Nor did she, at no point was she made to feel like a burden. Timely- any time my mom had a request with the CNAs or staff, our calls generally were answered within a 10 minute time frame, on the one instance where that was not the case, the receptionist (Marlee, an absolute gem) called for assistance from another unit and followed up with me to ensure moms needs were met. Physical therapy- positive reinforcement & appropriately challenging. Mom went in not being able to walk & is now able to walk. We even had sessions with PT/OT where we as family were taught her routine so that we can continue the work at home. Mom is the type that has always been averse to physical activity, most notable was her new found motivation and excitement towards exercise. Privacy & dignity- each room is private with a shared bathroom, much different than other care facilities where rooms are shared with a curtain between patients, allowing for a sense of personal space. Mom is religious & her requests for female staff in assistance with the restroom was always honored, even if staffing challenges were experienced. Extra curricular activities - while more geared towards long-term care patients, a full assessment of moms interests were taken during intake meeting & options for activities which suited her interests were provided, they even have a salon where I was able to get her hair and nails done. Organized- upon entry a manual with contacts for each respective department is given, a full list of services, activities & daily schedules/routines are provided. Anytime I had questions or requests of a specific department, I was able to get in contact with the appropriate person to have my concerns met. Regimented- in her care routine meds were assessed appropriately, given in a timely manner according to physician guidelines, regular shower routine 3x a week & daily routines were consistent. Only critique: while the facility overall is clean & smells clean (very important to note) I had higher expectations for the cleanliness of her room, often I felt it could have been swept more regularly & felt that the sheets should have been changed more often. Overall, would consider this place again if needed and have full confidence in the quality of care/competence of facility & staff. Thank you for caring for my mother & providing me peace of mind for the first time in months.
My friend, Tonia, was in your facility recently. I saw her get very good care and the staff that I saw when I was visiting her were very professional. I've worked in cardiology here in Tucson for many years and have always heard good things about Handmakers.
Facility was of great help to my grandfather, physical therapy helped him get his strength back wish he didn't have to leave there. Mary, the liason great experience with her also, she was very kind and concerned in her follow ups about my grandfather. Only complaint, there is a night shift nurse that my grandfather said was rather rude and had a bad attitude. Other than that, very clean nice facility!
