My mom hadn’t visited with her mother in 5+ months! During the height of the pandemic, we were only able to visit outdoors, so the past winter months wouldn’t have been conducive for outdoor visits. Now that the restrictions have lifted and the weather is nicer, my mom went to visit with my grandma. Upon arrival, one of the residents (with memory issues) answered the door. My grandma was in sight in the kitchen. My mom called to her, but did not enter the home. The resident who answered invited my mom in, but she declined, since she planned to visit on the back deck outside. My mom said for my grandma to go out back and she would meet her there. This is when the only worker (for 4 or more residents with a range of needs) came rushing to the front door, no mask, and began to dismiss my mom on the grounds that she hadn’t made an appointment. She claimed the appointment rule was a Covid measure and as my mom tried to show her documentation from the ombudsman and state health departments about Covid rules and residents’ rights to visitation, the worker said, “I don’t care” and shut the front door on my mom, barring her from further contact with my grandma. I have visited the facility by myself several times, all through the height of the pandemic and no worker ever instructed me that an appointment was necessary (this same worker was present for most of my visits). I had visited a week or so prior to this incident, no appointment, and not only was I allowed to enter, when I left, I was told by this same worker, “Come back any time! We love having you.” Never a mention to make an appointment or that it was a requirement. The whole time I was there, this worker was unmasked, so if there are still Covid protections in place, why is she unmasked all day? My grandparents on the other side of my family were in *quality* facilities at their end-of-life, and I can say that the differences between those facilities and this one are drastic and obvious. At those facilities, our family was never denied visitation (quite the contrary, they encouraged it and were so kind and welcoming), never required an appointment, we could stay all day long (and did), and they were bright, cheery, and had activities and events all the time, etc. This is the opposite! When choosing to make the tough decision of placing your elderly for care, choose wisely. Remember that you get what you pay for. This is the “Motel 6” to the “Hyatt Regency” level of care my other grandparents received. I am so disappointed and mostly just incredibly sad for my grandmother and my mother. The time remaining is so precious and fleeting. We were all robbed of 2 years with our elderly due to the pandemic, and now to still experience any barriers to connection is not only wrong, it’s immoral. The worst and most sad part is that my grandmother with Alzheimer’s was looking on helplessly as she witnessed her daughter being turned away after such a long time in between visits. Even without an appointment, surely a visit could have easily been arranged on the spot. This was so unprofessional and cruel to all involved. There is video of this entire ordeal and it has been provided to the proper authorities for help. If this is how visitors are treated, what treatment are the residents receiving behind closed doors, especially when appointments are required so the conditions and treatment can be easily hidden? Bottom line: Not only do I not recommend this facility, I discourage it 100%.
