About

Huntington Retirement Home

Huntington Retirement Home is a licensed residential care elderly located in Torrance, California. Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) provide non-medical care and supervision in a homelike setting for people 60 years and older who are unable to live independently.

Huntington Retirement Home has a licensed capacity of 155 residents. Services include assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and medication management. RCFEs also provide meals, housekeeping, laundry, social activities, and 24-hour supervision. Many offer specialized care for residents with memory impairment.

Who We Serve: RCFEs serve older adults who need assistance with daily activities but do not require 24-hour skilled nursing care. Residents may include those with early to mid-stage dementia, mobility limitations, or chronic health conditions.

Licensing: RCFEs in California are typically licensed by the Community Care Licensing Division of the California Department of Social Services under Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations.

Payment Options: In California, Medicaid may help pay for assisted living through the Assisted Living Waiver (ALW). Eligibility is based on both financial and functional criteria. Contact California Department of Health Care Services or visit https://www.dhcs.ca.gov/services/ltc/Pages/AssistedLivingWaiver.aspx to learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply. Wait lists are common for waiver programs, so applying early is recommended.

Families researching assisted living options should verify the facility's current license status, review any inspection reports, and schedule a visit to assess whether the environment and services meet their loved one's needs. You can verify this facility's license and view inspection reports at California's facility search. For more information about assisted living regulations in California, visit California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division.

Licensing requirements and regulations may change. We recommend verifying current requirements directly with your state's licensing agency.

I also would rate this place a 0 if I could. I knew something was wrong with this place after visiting my husband’s grandma. I feel extreme sadness and guilt now that she’s gone, even though her being there was absolutely out of our hands. It was his family’s decision and even though we begged them not to place her there, they swore it was the best place where she could spend her last years. Unfortunately they were wrong, and she wasn’t well taken care of at all whatsoever. She was neglected and abused; she was left alone in the dark, in her wheelchair multiple times. Sitting in the “activity room” by herself, working on “puzzles” she couldn’t even solve by herself while everyone else was watching a movie next door. She was also left alone in her room facing the wall. She had lost mobility and was fully depending on someone to care for her like a child would. These people are horrible, heartless and cruel. They lack empathy and compassion. I don’t want to imagine what she endured by herself when no one else was watching. One of those times when we found her alone and looking at the wall, she was relieved to see us and said thank goodness you’re here! I’ve been trying to get someone to put me back in bed for hours and no one shows up. My husband was trying to help one of the caregivers after I went looking for her, and she was clearly very upset. She said she could move from the wheelchair to the bed on her own, and laughed like he was exaggerating by simply trying to help by holding her arm. We’re talking about an elderly, wheelchair bound woman! I listened to her and believed her right away the last time we visited her, and she decided to stop eating for good after being there for years. She told us they were mean people, who knew how to play it off and hide it. Please watch over your loved ones if you have to have them live there. Please listen to them if they express concern and sadness. I wish my grandma in law would’ve never ended at such a miserable place; after working so hard her whole life ,while helping others with love and patience. She had already endured so much as a child as well, I can’t imagine the depression and helplessness she must’ve felt all by herself, knowing she had to stay there and couldn’t go anywhere else. Hence the reason she stopped eating altogether and decided to join her love in heaven. May she rest peacefully. I will forever miss and love her.

I had to move my elderly Stepfather to a new retirement home a few years ago, and The Huntington was one of the recommendations. They work with the PACE program, and that option was a deciding factor. I will say that it was the right choice. Heather, Carol, Corina, and the rest of the staff took great care with my Stepfather, even though he was a bit difficult to handle at times. He was recently place into hospice care, and again, the staff was excellent with his last days. I know The Huntington is a business, but they treated my Stepfather like Family.

I want to express my deep dissatisfaction with the administration staff, particularly Karina and Heather. Their management and communication skills are severely inadequate. If you have a loved one at this facility, I strongly advise you to remove them as soon as possible. The caregivers display laziness and a blatant disrespect for the residents, resulting in unacceptable treatment. When I addressed these serious concerns with Heather, the facility administrator, she showed a troubling indifference that suggested my concerns were disregarded. The abuse—both verbal and otherwise—faced by residents is alarming. In the memory care unit, it is completely unacceptable that residents are left alone in dark rooms around the clock. When attempting to contact the med techs, you find yourself endlessly on hold, with no response. Additionally, this facility lacks compassion for their residents and I urge anyone who has loved ones at this facility to remove them as fast as you can.

The Huntington's staff took wonderful care of my mother in the last three years of her life. The caregivers and medical staff were solicitous of her needs and loving in their attention to her. When I left in the evening, I had every confidence that she was in good hands. The facility is kept immaculately clean. There is a genuine feeling of community. I recommend this facility to anyone looking for a home for his or her parent.

Huntington Retirement is truly a very special place. I've visited and researched my fair share of care homes for my dad, who has vascular dementia. The love and care my father receives there is second to none. It all starts with Heather and Corina at the helm who have hearts of gold themselves and that spirit is present in all of the wonderful employees. Nina and Cristina are true angels on the staff. Everyone there has become a member of my father's family. Quite frankly, my father is more responsive to them than us. Sure, it would be nice to be acknowledged and get a smile out of him, but I am so enthralled that the staff there has forged a beautiful relationship with him that elicits laughter and smiles from him with each interaction! Here's to Huntington and a job incredibly done! On behalf of my entire family, we could not be happier and are indebted to them for the true home they have created for my dad.
