Joplin Gardens

Whoever was working the reception desk on 08/14 at 11am is very unprofessional with insanely poor customer service skills. She talked over me, yelled & then hung up. Such a shame for a place that is supposed to care for people who can't care for themselves.

This place is awful. My grandfather was here for physical therapy and when I tell you the service is POOR, it is unbelievable. For a few weeks I had to keep reminding the staff to do my grandfathers laundry, help him bathe and even change the bedsheets. I took him to a dialysis appointment myself, which they were failing to do so or properly help him dress and get ready for as he is 90 and unable to do so by himself - we get back and his bed is made but when I pull the covers back it is still the same dirty sheets with crumbs and stains on it from meals. I had to request the staff to bring me sheets before I put him back in this bed. Often times they would forget to put him back in bed comfortably and even forget to put his oxygen on him. There was a very small handful of people I could give credit to as being good employees, a man working overnights and a lady with green tips in her hair. I can’t say any other staff really cared to do anything but sit in the office. My grandfather, who is the kindest and most polite person there is, even had bad to say about his care. His nails were dirty with food in them. They didn’t bother to help with proper hygiene as he is unable to get out of bed and do those things himself. I never once seen a doctor there to check on him. They often moved his things around to where it was unreachable to him such as his drinks, urinal, wheelchair, glasses, etc. Freeman Hospital sent him here to regain strength after pneumonia but I do not recommend anyone send their family members here.

This place was awful!!! They don’t care and they don’t ever give you a bath. When my husband was there they never gave him a bath. The water where you fill your cup was corroded and they never cleaned it. The food is terrible.

Pleasant decor. My sons and I had a great visit with a friend. Though it may not be apparent, they offer guests coffee and soda near the cafeteria/eating area while you’re there. I like the nice hallways because instead of everything being located in a long line, it’s more like an east wing, west wing sort of setup. Though that means, if you forgot your friends room number, or you got disoriented, you may need help. That’s okay, the staff seem nice here. When we went, there was a warning on the door indicating they had a Covid outbreak among residents. I’m sure that’s a difficult things to manage because the facility is medium sized. We were worried they wouldn’t let us inside, but someone opening the locked front door let us know the worry is among residents spreading to each other. If we weren’t sick and not at risk individuals, there would be no problem as long as we practiced caution to keep them safe. We found gloves and masks on the table at the door, signed in, put on a mask, and looked for our friend. It doesn’t appear they use the front of the facility very much which is too bad because it’s nicely done. Though it appears many of the residents have mobility issues. Plus the Covid outbreak. We were assured they had to have the sign even if only one resident tested positive. A group living situation is hard to get right considering it’s hard to staff facilities these days, but I’d call this one a little above average.

ZERO STAR RATING Terrible care in the rehab wing. Horrific experience ! My dad was there less than 24 hours. Dad end up in an emergency situation from lack of care and was taken by ambulance back to the hospital. His Catheter bag was never emptied the whole time he was at Joplin Gardens. It was so full it backed up into his body. He was trying to pull out all tubes due to pain but he was not able express what was wrong. He became confused and evenly incoherent. The bed and catheter bag was so close to a wall, my mom didn’t see it. Care takers never checked it during all this until the next morning when I believe the nurse finally came in. Other experiences while there: Most staff members seemed uneducated/unprofessional/unqualified !!!! The time it took getting a nurse to come to the room was ridiculous. At arrival, a staff member placed dad at a table in the dining area. He was not in any condition to be sitting in a wheel chair for over an hour. The Worker parked dad’s chair at the table and when I looked down dad’s foot was pressed so hard against the table leg his toes were bent under. Once placed in bed, the 2 workers seemed unqualified. Seriously, I couldn’t understand how they were hired to be caring for someone in this condition. For example, when I asked for help the worker was more interested in emptying the trash in his room than helping me with dad. Honestly,, The nicest most caring person in the wing of the JoplinGardens was the woman who was the custodian! Joplin Gardens looks nice on a surface level but would never recommend to family, friends or anyone. My dad passed 8 months ago but I feel it is extremely important to share our experience so this doesn’t happen to another family and their loved ones. He left Joplin Gardens to be admitted back into the hospital where he was never able to recover. He passed a week later.
