About

Star Hospice

Star Hospice is a Medicare-certified hospice provider serving Gurnee, Illinois and surrounding areas. A Medicare-certified hospice provides comfort care and support services to patients with terminal illnesses and their families. Hospice care focuses on quality of life rather than curative treatment.

Hospice care is available to patients whose physician certifies they have a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its normal course. Patients may receive hospice care at home, in a hospice facility, nursing home, or hospital.

Medicare-certified hospices must provide all four levels of hospice care: routine home care, continuous home care for periods of crisis, general inpatient care for symptom management, and inpatient respite care to give caregivers a break. Care is provided by an interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and trained volunteers.

Medicare covers hospice services with no cost to patients for most services, including medications for symptom control, medical equipment, and 24-hour access to care. For more information about hospice benefits, visit Medicare.gov. Compare hospice providers at Medicare Care Compare.

Quality data and provider information are updated periodically by CMS. We recommend verifying current information at Medicare Care Compare.

BEWARE!!! People please READ this review. I wish I could give them zero stars. The worst experience in my life with medical care ever. They put terrible drugs in my refrigerator and didn't show or tell me what they were for. The first nurse came in sweating, had her mask pulled down (during covid), no gloves and didn't examine mom. Requested a new nurse and although she seemed to be a better nurse, she ended up ordering a lot of morphine and had it sent to my house. Each time she knew more was coming she would call me and tell me that she had a package coming but not to open it and that she would take care of it when she came. After this happened numerous times, 'i opened one and it contained two more bottles of morphine. There was still a bottle in the frig. She came and when she left she took the new shipment with her. I called the police but I was told it was my word against hers. When she came to check on mom she had morphine patches all over her upper body. She of course denied it all. .... Because mom was close to dying (without any morphine), I stupidly kept star hospice. I have to say the 3rd nurse we had was a true hospice nurse although she was handicapped and unable to move my mom to examine her bed sores . Her sores became steadily worse. When she passed, the nurse coldly pushed her on her back and listened to her heart. Said to me what time did she die and walked out. The hospice nurse was in our kitchen talking to the clergyman. We heard her telling him that the nurse that took the morphine was suspected of stealing morphine in the past. Ugh. I knew I should have never used star hospice. They have been in trouble before when they were Vista. I was so devastated when mom died I didn't have the strength to start a law suit. I still may. I haven't forgot what a terrible experience this was!!! Never!

In January of 2012, my first experience of hospice was with my Father-in-law and his 4 year battle with cancer. In an already challenging time and having that be my first experience in utilizing hospice care, I now know that the agency we used at that time (NOT STAR HOSPICE) was useless. I was not informed accurately on what to expect and was greatly unsupported – often times feeling ALONE to manage it all. Last year we were recommended to Star Hospice for our Mom. My experiences with Star have been just the opposite from my previous one. From the very beginning, we received top-notch support from this team. They coordinated supplies, equipment and medications for Mom and had it at her home before she was discharged from the hospital. We never felt alone. We always knew what to expect. They encouraged us to call whenever we needed them and we did – even in the middle of the night! They guided us through Mom’s final journey and was with us every step of the way. They became an extension of our family and I couldn’t imagine what it would have been like without them. Amy Cave

Star hospice was so extremely kind and caring with my Daddy last year. It took me a little time to write this review but I am very grateful to Star Hospice (especially Liz, his nurse) for everything they did for my family during the most difficult time of our life. They were all ridiculously responsive (in a great way), helpful and went above and beyond for all our needs. Elizabeth, Debbie, Pam, Angie, Joe... They were all amazing and I couldn't have asked for a better team when it came to such a horrifically difficult time. The support they provided was top tier. Though my Daddy is no longer with us, the team of Star Hospice is still there for us when we need them - to talk, answer questions, etc. I think of them as the hospice with the biggest heart and from the bottom of mine I want to thank them.

This past fall my husband was admitted to Star Hospice when it became evident that his battle with lung cancer was being lost. This was such a heartbreaking difficult time for myself and my family. We were married 41 years and were a very close family unit. I had heard so many wonderful things about this company from my sister who worked for this hospice. I never regret my decision to choose them. From the first time they came to our house to admit my husband they made us feel comfortable with their kindness and compassion and their attention to teaching us every detail to help make the journey less scary. We never felt intimidated to ask questions or to contact them when we needed them. They have a team approach and address every aspect of care needed including physical, pain relief, emotional and also spiritual and grief support. They just had that intuition to be able to anticipate both my husband's and our family needs. They were incredible and became like part of our family helping us through this most difficult time of our lives. Nurse Liz and my sister Debbie, the social worker Pam , the health aide Angie and the deacon Joe each were so helpful and supportive. We are so thankful to all of them and to Star Hospice for being there for us at such a critical time to help us through this difficult experience.

We had Star Hospice for home hospice for a month for my mom. They were fabulous, I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for in home hospice care, from the nurses to the case workers to the chaplains they were caring and efficient and just lovely people to work with. Its not an easy job but they did it with efficiency and compassion and were always there when we needed them. Thank you Star Hospice
