Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Job Description
CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT / HOME CARE POSITION: Provides basic nursing care to clients within the scope of nursing assistant responsibilities and performs basic nursing procedures under the direction of a licensed nurse. QUALIFICATIONS: • High school graduate or GED preferred. • Current state license • 6 months of current work experience • Knowledge and experience in bedside nursing required • Full use of hands, arms, and legs • Ability to read, write, and speak English • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and squat for prolonged periods. • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. unassisted frequently (occasionally up to 50 lbs. unassisted) and push/pull objects • Willingness to work beyond normal working hours, weekends, and in other positions temporarily • Willingness to attend and participate in monthly educational programs • Ability to interact effectively with clients, their families, and other staff members. RESPONSIBLITIES: • Take and record temperature, pulse, and respirations. • Give or assist with bed bath or sponge bath or shower • Give mouth care brush teeth, rinse mouth, and care for dentures. • Brush and comb hair. • Shampoo hair. • Shave men only with electric razors, but not to be done after eye surgery. • Skin care as needed. • Place and remove bedpan and/or urinal. • Assist with range of motion after being demonstrated by physical therapist who assumes total responsibility for the care of the patient. • Assist patient to change position. • Help patient with prescribed activity. o In and out of bed or assist with transfer activities o Use of assertive devises, cane, wheel chair, crutches, Hoyer lift o Transfer from bed to wheel chair, chair to toilet, to commode o Ambulation, independent or with assistance • Make occupied or unoccupied bed. • Help patient to dress or change clothing. • Remove reapply elastic stockings or ace bandages. • Feed or assist with foods and fluids according to prescribed diet. • Prepare special diets. Diet list from doctor should be left in home. Nurse will over view the diet and preparation with certified nursing assistant to make sure it’s all understood. • Remind patient to take meds. May hand container to patient and assist with needed fluids for swallowing oral meds. • Promote mental alertness of patient. • Call attention to the nurse any changes with patient. • Do the laundry for the client • Preform light housekeeping activities such as: o Change bed linen o Dusting o Vacuuming o Cleaning kitchen appliances o Damp mopping / bathroom floors o Shopping o Prepare meals o Tasks as directed on care plan • Certified Nursing Assistants may only preform duties listed on care plan or when otherwise instructed by clinical supervisor. • The following activities are NOT permitted: o Cutting finger nails and toe nails o Administer injections o Enemas, irrigations, or installations o Dressing changes o Tube or Gastrostomy feedings o Foley catheters • If you encounter any problems, call our office at 508-675-1777 or 4
