Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Job Description
SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing personal care to nursing home residents and performing routine duties assigned by Director of Nursing, Charge Nurse(s), Activity Director, Management staff. QUALIFICATIONS: • Must complete and pass Certified Nursing Assistant courses. • Complete orientation program on the floor. • Complete in-services required before beginning on the floor. • Complete 12 CEU’s annually. RESPONSIBLITIES & DUTIES: • Assist the resident with activities of daily living and personal cares which may include, but not limited to: bathing, toileting, dressing, toe/nail care (with exception of diabetic residents), grooming, transferring, oral cares, shaving, hearing aids, glasses, feeding, delivering of meals/supplements, redirection of a confused client. • Help each resident to reach and maintain the highest level of performance and independence. • Follow resident Care Sheets. • Assist with treatments as delegated by the charge nurse. • Observe residents’ physical and emotional condition such as change in attitude, appearance, loss of appetite, toileting, weight, mental health, etc., and report to charge nurse. • Document resident behaviors in ‘Behavior Book’ and report to charge nurse. • Attend in-service training as assigned/mandated. • Collect urine specimens as directed by charge nurse. • Use proper body mechanics with use of gait belt with any transfers and walking. Use of pal lift as stated per care sheet. • Maintains residents unit in a clean and neat order. Beds made, clothes put away, clothing labeled with resident name, soiled clothing/linen disposed of appropriately and placed in assigned area, dirty dishes/cups removed, garbage empties, etc. • Ask and offer activities daily and assist activity staff as needed to get resident to activities. • Take TPR/BPs on bath days and PRN as directed by charge nurse/DON. • Check weights monthly. • Clean utensils and equipment as scheduled. • Empty commodes, urinals, and catheter bags at end of shifts. Record I/O’s. • Make resident rounds every 2 hours. • Respond to call lights and alarms on all wings and assist as needed. • Promote resident and staff safety; wipe spills or accidents as soon as detected. Make sure safety issues are followed for each resident. Mats on floor when needed. Call light in reach at all time. Beds in lowest position. • Commodes have buckets in place when in room. Toileting and repositioning schedules are filled out and accurate. • Name tag to be worn at all times while working. • Pass ice and water on am/pm shifts routinely and PRN per resident needs/requests. • Pass out fresh towels and washcloths in rooms PRN. Make sure there is 1 set in room at all times. • Check and refill supplies in resident rooms/utility rooms. Resident name on personal items. LANGUAGE SKILLS: • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence and memos. • Ability to write simple correspondence and documentation on each client. • Ability to effectively present information on one-to-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Show a genuine concern and interest in caring for the elderly. • Must understand and communicate using specialized medical terminology. • Must be punctual, with a good attendance record. • Must follow building dress code and maintain good personal hygiene and grooming. • Must be mature and emotionally stable using calm and kind tone of voice, remaining calm in difficult or unusual circumstances. • Must promote clients’ independence, not dependence, by offering choices and fostering self-help skills. • Must be able to prioritize and organize work effectively and efficiently. • Must be flexible and adaptable to changing situations, including but not limited to, being assigned to different wings. • Must be compassionate and work with tact and ethical awareness. • Must work as a team member with other per
