Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Job Description
Job Title: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Responsible to: Staff Nurse Minimum Qualifications • Education: Satisfactory completion of a state approved Nurse Aide training program • Knowledge and Abilities: Must know basic personal care of residents in long term care setting. Must maintain environment in orderly manner and be able to communicate effectively with the residents, visitors, supervisors and co-workers. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of resident conditions and affairs. Physical Requirements • During shift scheduled, must be able to stand/walk/sit the length of the shift • Must be able to use hands for repetitive grasping, pushing/pulling and fine manipulation • Must be able to bend, squat and lift frequently during the length of the shift • Must be able to lift 75-100 lbs occasionally, 35-50 lbs frequently with occasional sitting and frequent standing/walking • Other physical requirements may require two-person lifts/transfer or use of mechanical lift Areas of Responsibility A. Provide personal care to residents 1. Provide daily hygiene including bathing, oral care, skin care, hair and nail care as assigned and required. 2. Change bed linens on assigned shower days 3. Dress/undress residents as needed keeping residents clean and dry 4. Assist with feeding of residents and offering additional food and/or fluids 5. Answer call lights promptly 6. Provide morning and evening care measures as appropriate and as appropriate according to the CNA Kardex 7. Provide positioning to residents in chair, bed or as needed B. Maintain clean work environment 1. Use only necessary items for care i.e. linens, towels/washcloths 2. Remove unused items from resident rooms after care is provided 3. Return resident’s personal care items to resident’s room after use; put items back in drawers of bedside table 4. Replace furniture to proper location to ensure clear and clutter-free environment 5. Handle equipment and supplies with care to avoid wastage or breakage C. Assist residents with preventative and therapeutic procedures 1. Obtain resident’s weight upon admission and as required 2. Keep resident’s skin clean and dry 3. Apply skin care products for prevention of skin breakdown i.e. lotion, moisture barrier cream 4. Perform range of motion exercises daily and as needed 5. Assist resident’s to ambulate daily and as needed; utilize assistive devices if necessary 6. Assist the nurse with resident bladder training program D. Adhere to safety and infection control policy and procedure 1. Maintain good personal hygiene and adhere to uniform policy; gait belt and name tag are considered part of the uniform 2. Change ice water every shift; pitchers are changed on night shift daily 3. Perform routine cleaning of resident’s bedside stand and closet, care equipment, utility rooms, kitchenette, shower rooms and wheelchairs 4. Follow infection control policy and procedure 5. Attend in-services as required or offered 6. Report defective equipment or other potential safety hazards promptly E. Effective communication 1. Report changes in resident condition or unusual signs, symptoms, accidents or incidents 2. Document resident nutrition and fluid intake; report change in intake to staff nurse promptly 3. Ensure documentation is completed at end of each shift i.e. ADL record, bladder training 4. Clarify questions regarding assignment with staff nurse 5. Review CNA Kardex prior to start of each shift F. Promote positive public relations for the facility 1. Display courteous, tactful and helpful manner with residents and visitors 2. Use proper telephone etiquette 3. Represent facility in a positive manner G. Perform other tasks as requested 1. Assist other personnel when assignments are completed 2. Participate in activities with residents, transporting residents to and from activities 3. Perform tasks indicated on the CNA orientation check list
