Understaffed, rude and dangerous. My mom was sent here for temporary rehab for a broken ankle. They had a list of her medications from the hospital, but would not get one of her pills because "it was too expensive" and looked for a substitute, but tried to do this over a weekend. The pill was for muscle spasms that kept her awake and already disturbed her sleep for one night, and would a further 3 until Monday! The on call doctor for the nursing home wasn't in and wouldn't do anything. One of the staff yelled at my mother to stop using the call button so much and needing to go to the bathroom, apparently preferring her to wet the bed and fester in it? She is diabetic with bladder and stomach issues and again, with a broken ankle and not supposed to move herself. Apparently, the nursing home had 1 nurse and 2 aides on staff for 30 patients. It isn't the patients fault, confront your management about being understaffed and overworked. Mom asked if a nurse would help her pack when leaving, because of her broken ankle and the risk of moving around so much. Nurse originally said yes. Mom got discharged, nurse now REFUSED to help her pack, leading to my mom to have to do it and wheel herself down to the front door herself, while nurses complained her insurance would not cover it for not staying her full stay. They won't even help you leave safely, for god's sake. Absolutely abhorrent facility. It might be good if your loved one doesn't actually need help and is independent. But if they need care, do not send them here. They are not equipped to help, and cut far too many corners. Keep your loved ones away from La Crescent Health Services if you care for their comfort, and even safety.
My 77 year old mother was placed here after a hip replacement. She was recovering nicely at Mayo but was told she needed 1-2 additional weeks of therapy at a rehabilitation facility. Upon arrival, we found the facility to be extremely outdated and very run down, my mother was placed in a room with another person who lives at the facility long-term, no private rooms were available. My mother had been using a platform walker at Mayo which really helped her walk better with her painful bone-on-bone shoulder. Upon arrival at La Crescent, we were told they did not have such a walker, but one was ordered and should arrive within 5-7 days. Relatively quickly my mother developed two ailments she did not have upon arrival: 1) a sore back due to the thin hard mattress that hurt her back so much that she slept several nights in a chair, she was told a softer mattress could not be obtained 2) a sore knee, perhaps from sleeping in a chair or not walking as well as she did at Mayo due to the platform walker never arriving. Also, her shoulder was hurting more and more because the chairs were so low she was having a very difficult time getting up and down (I ultimately chose to buy her a raised seat cushion because something similar was not available at the facility). At the two week mark, after getting worse at the facility, she was told she needed to stay another three weeks because she was not well enough to go home. This was not acceptable to our family considering the fact she was getting worse. It took an additional week for the facility to get things in order to release her, it was an agonizing wait. I'm happy to report that within 24 hours of my mother being back home at her assisted living facility, she was sleeping great, her knee and back pain were gone and she was truly on the road to recovery. Sadly this La Crescent rehabilitation facility did not have the necessary equipment and staff to produce a healing environment for my mom. Sidenote: the patient rooms do not have phones in them, so if you do not arrive with your own private cell phone, all incoming and outgoing calls will need to be coordinated via the front desk staff, which makes staying in touch with family and friends much more of a challenge. I'll end on a positive note, my mom said that the food was good and the staff was kind.
LCHS is an older building, but the staff are amazing! The management team is easy to work with and very accommodating. The nursing staff are knowledgeable and caring. So far, it has been a great experience.
Very friendly atmosphere. The staff are very professional. Excellent place to bring your loved one. Call & schedule for a tour(if they do them🤷♂️)
