Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Job Description
Primarily performing personal care and restorative procedures, the Certified Nursing Assistant is an important part of the nursing team. Tasks may vary from total performance of personal care/activities of daily living for a resident to assisting residents to gain more independence in self performance of those activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports/records activities/observations objectively.
Performs aseptic hand washing technique.
Performs bed-making techniques:
Unoccupied closed/open bed, Occupied bed and Use of side rails
Assists with protective/safety measures:
Fire safety and prevention, Oxygen safety, General safety measures and Universal precautions
Determines resident's height and weight
Assists with the care and environment of residents' room
Assists with positioning of resident
Performs personal bedside care of the resident:
Routine oral hygiene
Care of dentures
Oral hygiene and mouth care of the unconscious resident
Complete bed bath
Partial bed bath
Tub bath
Shower
Back Rub
Changing residents clothing or gown
Hair care/combing/shampooing
Shaving resident's facial hair
Nail care
Performs perineal care
Performs indwelling catheter care
Assists with excretory functions such as assisting with bedpan, urinal, bedside commode and assisting resident to the restroom
Assists with measuring fluids such as intake/output, restriction of fluids and empty/measure contents of urine from indwelling urinary catheter container
Assists with meals by preparing resident for meal, serves meal or meal trays to residents, feeds residents, assists residents who need help chewing, etc. with meals, serves between meal snacks and offers fluids between meals
Assists with urine and stool specimen collections
Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer procedures
Performs Oral/rectal/axillary/tympanic temperatures, radial/apical pulse, respirations, blood pressure vital signs.
May assist with preparing a resident for examination by nurse or physician
Assists with the care of the incontinent patient:
Application and removal of incontinence pads and disposable undergarments
Careful cleansing and drying of skin and assist in the preventive of skin breakdown while observing and report areas of potential skin breakdown
Assists with the care of patients with special needs:
Seizure precautions, turning and repositioning, hearing deficits, and vision, speech, sensory and cognitive impairments
Accurately records information and reports to nurse any variance in residents' condition
Proficient in use of resident care equipment such as transfer aids, mobility aids, patient lifts, and special splints
Performs range of motion exercises
Encourages resident to remain as independent as possible in ADL’s, assisting with cares as indicated
Promotes restorative/rehabilitation in all patients
Promotes quality of life
Promotes participation in activities/therapy programs by performing cares in a timely manner to allow resident participation
May participate in Quality Assurance team functions
Participates in Care Planning sessions
May participate in the orientation of new employees
Other duties as assigned by unit nurse
Familiarize oneself with location and use of firefighting equipment, alarms, and disaster procedures
Attend educational meetings planned for this position
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Must hold a certificate documenting successful completion of nurse aide training course approved by the Illinois Board of Educators or be exempt having established equivalency as defined by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation enabling him/her to practice as a C.N.A. in the state of Illinois. Must be listed on the registry in the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation or be eligible to be listed. Work experience in long term care strongly desired. Working knowledge of patient care delivery in the Geriatric/Skilled Nursing Setting.
