Certified Medication Technician (CMT) Job Description
Northview Village Duties and Responsibilities – Ward Clerk/Certified Medical Technician I. ¬General A. Administer medication in accordance with job description and standard accepted nursing practice. B. Possess knowledge of basic principle of medication administration. C. Utilize appropriate reference material. II. Specific A. Carries out medication techniques and follows established guidelines and policies. 1. Count and check controlled drugs 2. Order drugs as needed 3. Check medication with physician order sheet. 4. Prepare, administers and chart medication, by all routes except those given by the parenteral route. a. Prepare and administer oral medication b. Prepare and administer rectal medication c. Prepare and administer vaginal medication d. Prepare and administer instillation; ear, eye, nasal e. Apply topical medication 5. Safe guard medications preparation and storage area. a. Placement and locking of area according to regulations. b. Clean medication bins, cabinet shelves and drawers, nurses’ station and help keep medication room neat and organized. c. Scheduled Chart Checks for new orders d. Gathers soiled supplies to be returned to central supply and appropriate area. e. Ensure new orders are transcribed accurately on MARS/TARS f. Perform MAR TO MAR check after monthly recapping. 6. Requisitions and credit medication 7. Inventory drugs 8. Maintain aseptic conditions 9. Keep medication profile current. B. Report and record information relative to administration of medication. 1. Observe, evaluate, report and record responses of resident to medication given. 2. Displays knowledge of side effects, interactions, add mixtures, and nursing implications of common medication. 3. Have knowledge of any nursing care that needs to be done in conjunction with as specific medication. C. Charts, in record any facts relevant to medication or medication need or affect. D. Communication 1. Reports problems, changes or question to team leader or charge nurse. 2. Participates actively in team conferences 3. Make frequent rounds on resident noting condition and request assist with answers. 4. Answer all residents’ lights promptly. 5. Make suggestions regarding improvement of resident care. 6. Assist other nursing assistant with residents care whenever not passing medication. 7. Any other duties as assigned. E. Medication Technician DOES NOT 1. Prepare and inject parenteral drugs, intradermal, hypodermic, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous. 2. Administer bladder instillations. 3. Take verbal or telephone orders. 4. Calculate conversions 5. Dispose of medication 6. Administer Oxygen by re-breathing mask, nasal catheter 7. Administer certain categories of PRN’s.
