Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Job Description
Tasks assigned to this position involve exposure to blood and body fluids. POSITION SUMMARY: Acts as a charge nurse in the assigned Health Care Center. Incumbent will assist the Supervisor, as directed, in planning, organizing, developing, and directing day-to-day operations of the Center. Participate in the assessment of resident needs and the development and coordination of resident care plans. Perform those nursing procedures requiring Registered Nurse designation, as well as some managerial tasks, with a customer service focus. Performs procedures to include the following in accordance with Blue Skies policies and generally accepted nursing practices: Medication administration and recording; administer oxygen; insert and irrigate Foley catheters; provide tracheotomy care; perform Heimlich maneuver; provide decubitus assessment and care; perform gastrostomy tube procedures; perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); utilize Automated External Defibrillator (AED). GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to supervise and work harmoniously with professional staff and interact effectively with resident's family, physicians and other professionals, internally and externally. Incumbent must be able to speak, read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English. Is expected to perform duties with only general supervision and exercise independent action to meet the requirements of the position. The ability to communicate in Spanish is helpful, but not essential. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Required: Must be a Registered Nurse or LVN licensed by, and in good standing with, the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. Preferred: Some education beyond the minimum licensing level is desirable. At least one year of previous experience in a long term care setting. EQUIPMENT AND COMPUTER OPERATIONS: Must be able to satisfactorily demonstrate knowledge of, and train others in the use of, professional nursing equipment and supplies and simple and complex medical equipment to include patient lifts, hospital beds, nurse call systems, and whirlpool baths. Basic computer knowledge is essential, as well as the ability to operate general office equipment such as copier, telephone, and fax. Training will be provided to familiarize incumbent with work-related equipment to ensure safety and proper operation during use. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: Required: Must have current CPR and AED certifications. Must be current in attaining the Continuing Education Units necessary to meet licensing requirements and participate in continuing education programs, when directed. Preferred: Specialized training in nursing, supervisory skills, and infection control, is desirable. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises and provides nursing care according to physician orders and in conformance with recognized nursing techniques and procedures, established standards, and administrative policies. Assigns tasks to unlicensed personnel. Records all pertinent treatment information on assigned residents to include observations, treatments, and medications in Electronic Medical Records (EMRs); keeps Supervisor informed of any adverse changes in condition of same. Makes periodic rounds of each assigned resident, notes needs and conditions, and reports adverse situations, as applicable, to the Supervisor and Physician. Receives Physician orders and enters them in EMRs, as needed. Maintains required medical records and administers medications and treatments according to State laws and regulations and standard nursing practices. Provides oncoming charge nurse with resident reports and receives same from departing shift, as required. Performs routine nursing duties to include: baths, oral hygiene, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, nutrition and diet management and assessments, feeding, exercise, dressing changes, specimen collection, and postmortem care. Performs other general tasks as required to provide for the safety and physical
