Caregiver Job Description
Position Summary
The caregiver provides direct support and assistance to an individual diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). Due to the unique needs of PWS—including strict food management, behavioral support, and health monitoring—the caregiver plays a vital role in promoting safety, independence, and overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Care & Supervision
Assist with personal hygiene, dressing, toileting, and mobility as needed.
Provide structured supervision to ensure safety at all times.
Encourage independence while offering support when required.
Nutritional Support
Follow strict dietary guidelines as prescribed by the healthcare provider.
Monitor food access and portion control to prevent overeating.
Prepare balanced meals and snacks according to diet restrictions.
Medical & Health Monitoring
Monitor and record vital signs, weight, and daily health observations.
Assist with prescribed exercises and mobility routines.
Administer or remind client of medications per care plan.
Recognize and promptly report changes in condition, behavior, or appetite.
Behavioral & Emotional Support
Provide structured routines to reduce anxiety and support behavior management.
Implement strategies for de-escalation and redirection when behavioral issues arise.
Encourage participation in social, recreational, and educational activities.
Documentation & Communication
Accurately document daily care activities, health observations, and incidents.
Communicate effectively with family members, healthcare professionals, and supervisors.
Participate in care team meetings and ongoing training.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; additional healthcare training preferred.
Previous caregiving experience, especially with individuals with developmental disabilities or PWS, is strongly preferred.
Ability to follow structured care routines and maintain consistency.
Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills.
Physical ability to assist with lifting, transfers, and mobility support.
Must pass background check, CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
Working Conditions
Work may involve standing, walking, lifting, and assisting with mobility.
Must be comfortable working in a structured environment with food restrictions.
Requires patience, compassion, and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
