Certified Medication Technician (CMT) Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: MUST ALREADY BE A CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT Assists in the administration of medications and treatments to residents, as ordered by the attending Physician, under the direction of the attending Physician, charge nurse or unit and the Director of Nursing. The administration of medications and treatment shall be in accordance with established nursing standards, the policies, procedures and practices of this facility and the requirements of the state. Supports resident/patient care needs by performing delegated resident/patient care and non-resident/patient care tasks. Responsible for assisting resident/patient care team, in the treatment and care of resident/patients, in accordance with established policies and procedures and unit standards, to provide quality resident/patient care. May serve residents/patients of all ages; however, the major population served are adult and geriatric. QUALIFICATIONS: • Currently listed on the MN Nursing Assistant Registry. • Successful completion of the state approved medication administration course. • CPR certification. • Minimum of 1,000 hours experience as a Registered Nursing Assistant at the Pierz Villa. • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English • Good verbal and written communication skills. • Knowledge of the meaning and usage of common medical abbreviations, symbols and terms to the administration of medication. • Demonstrates resourcefulness and critical judgement in emergency situations. • Professional and Courteous customer service skills. • Physical Demands of this position include vision, hearing, repetitive motion and environment. • Have experience with operating computer. TASKS PERFORMED: 1. Administers and documents inhalers, eye drops, ear drops and oral, rectal and topical medications under the supervision and guidelines of the licensed nurse. TMAs do not administer medication or tube feedings per gastrointestinal or nasogastric tube or injections. 2. Watches for side effects and reports observations to the licensed nurse. 3. Makes decisions concerning the administration of medication for comfort under the guidance and supervision of the licensed nurse. Documents the effect of the comfort medication on the medication sheets. 4. Makes medication schedule adjustments in consultation with the licensed nurse and documents in the nurses’ notes as needed. 5. Consults with the licensed nurse as needed, keeping him/her informed of changes in the residents’ condition. Listens to report at the beginning of the shift and reports off at end of shift. 6. Does not dispense any stock medications on a routine basis; This is only to be done by a licensed nurse. 7. Checks all resident medications on a routine basis; supplies and reorders on timely basis. 8. Notes side effects off medications and make decisions concerning comfort measures and schedule adjustments as needed in consultation with licensed nurse. Makes decisions regarding the organization of their work assignments to ensure that tasks are completed on a timely basis and resident care needs are met on a priority basis. 9. Observes and verifies that the medication is ingested or applied as directed. Documents each instance where the prescribed medication is not administered including refusal, and immediately report it to the nurse in charge. 10. Performs TMA functions as inserviced and educated (e.g . administer treatment and performs passive ROM). Does not perform any sterile treatments (i.e. sterile dressing changes, wound cares stage 2-4) or catheterizations. 11. Makes sure that no medication is administered without written, signed, dated order from an MD. 12. Does not directly provide clinical information to physicians or families. 13. Reports any medication errors to RN immediately with follow-up on a written report and sign the reports as requested by the RN. 14. Assumes any Resident Care Attendance/NAR duties when necessary and when medication passes are complete. 15. Keeps entire work area clean

Compensation

$19.36 - $20.77 per hour + $5000 Sign-on Bonus
